The full form of IBM is International Business Machines, nicknamed as “Big Blue” because of the blue colour in its logo and products. It is a multinational technology and IT consulting organization founded on June 16, 1911 by Charles Ranlett Flint and Thomas J. Watson. Its headquarter is in Armonk, New York and its current CEO is Arvind Krishna. IBM was named by Thomas John Watson Sr. To one-up them in all respects, he called his company International Business Machines. IBM originated from the bringing together of several companies that worked to automate routine business transactions, including the first companies to build punched card-based data tabulating machines and to build time clocks. In 1911, these companies were merged into the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company (CTR).

The International Business Machines (IBM) company is the top supplier of mainframe computers in the 1970s and over the years, the company shifted its focus from hardware to software and services. By the 2010s, IBM further modified its business mix to emphasize such fields as cloud-based services and cognitive computing. IBM Watson, a cognitive system, has become the company’s high-visibility offering in the latter technology segment. Inventions by IBM include the automated teller machine (ATM), the floppy disk, the hard disk drive, the magnetic stripe card, the relational database, the SQL programming language, the UPC barcode, and dynamic random-access memory (DRAM).
