CAG: Comptroller and Auditor General

The full form of CAG is “Comptroller and Auditor General“. The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India is an authority, established by Article 148 of the Constitution of India, which audits all receipts and expenses of the Government of India and state governments, including those of agencies and authorities substantially financed by the government and in which the government has at least 51% share. Its headquarters are located in New Delhi, India. The CAG is appointed by the President of India on the recommendation of the Prime Minister (PM) of India for a period of 6 years. As of 2020, Rajiv Mehrishi, IAS is the CAG of India. He was appointed on September 25, 2017, and he is the 13th CAG in India.

CAG is also head of the Audit and Accounts Department of India. The CAG reports are taken into account by the Public Accounts Committees (PAC) and Public Business Committees (COPU), which are special committees in the Indian Parliament and state legislatures. It is one of the most powerful agencies to investigate financial fraud in India, such as the coal mine allocation scam and the 2G spectrum allocation scam. The CAG occupies the ninth place and enjoys the same status as a judge of the Supreme Court of India in order of Indian precedence.
