LLM: Legum Magister

The full form of LLM is Legum Magister (LL.M). It is a Latin term which specifies the master degree of Law. In English LL.M full form is Master of Law. Most of the people are confused to see double L (LL) in LL.M. They think that both of the L specifies different thing, but in Latin plural form of the word is abbreviated by repeating the letter. Here, LL specifies Legum which is the possessive plural form of Latin word Lex, which means “specific laws”. The LL.M. (Master of Laws) is an internationally recognized postgraduate law degree pursued by those either holding an undergraduate academic law degree, a professional law degree, or an undergraduate degree in a related subject. In some jurisdictions, the “Master of Laws” is the basic professional degree for admission into legal practice.

In most countries, lawyers are not required to hold an LL.M. degree, and many do not choose to obtain one. In India, the thrust of legal education is on undergraduate law degrees with most of those opting for the undergraduate law degree either going forward to enroll themselves with the Bar Council of India and start practicing as Advocates or giving legal advice without being eligible to appear in courts. Master’s degree of Law in India was in earlier times of 2 years but at present, it is of only 1 year.
