The full form of JNU is “Jawaharlal Nehru University“. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is a public university located in New Delhi, India. It was established in 1969 by an act of parliament. The JNU Bill was passed in Lok Sabha on 16 November 1966 and the JNU Act came into force on 22 April 1969. It was named after Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister. It is one of the leading institutes of India engaged in high level education and research work in subjects like humanities, social science, science, international studies etc. JNU has been considered as the best university in India by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NACC) survey conducted in July 2012. NACC has given the university a grade of 3.9 out of 4, which is the highest grade awarded to any educational institution in the country.

On 5 January 2020, more than 50 masked people armed with rods and sticks attacked the campus of Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi and injured more than 39 students and teachers. Many students received serious injuries. Professors who tried to intervene and protect the students, as well as ambulances carrying injured individuals, were also attacked. Eyewitnesses stated that policemen within the campus did not intervene to stop the mob. After attacking residents of the University campus for 3 hours, the mob escaped; none of its members were arrested or detained. All 36 students who were injured and admitted to AIIMS were discharged within 24 hours. The students of JNU had been participating in the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests. The attack has been called an attempt to suppress student activism during the CAA protests.
