FIR: First Information Report

The full form of FIR is First Information Report. In relation to any (criminal) incident near police, the information recorded for action is called FIR. An FIR is a document prepared by the police in which the information about the crime is described. This is usually the first step required by the police before starting a crime investigation.

What is FIR?

First Information Report or FIR is a written document prepared by the police of India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Japan etc. on receipt of information about a cognizable offense, a Police officer has the authority to make an arrest without a warrant. This information is often filled by the victim of a crime in the form of a complaint with the police. Any person can inform the police about an offense either orally or in writing. When the FIR is registered by the Police, a signed copy is also given to the victim or the same person who filed the FIR. Police cannot refuse to register an FIR as it is against the law.

FIR register is maintained in every police station. An FIR page contains the following information.

• FIR number and date
• Name of the victim or the name of the complainant
• Name and details of the offender (if known)
• Description of crime
• Place and time of offense
• Witnesses, if any.
