What is Google?

There is a lot of confusion about whether Google has a full form or it is simply a term coined by the founder of Google. Officially Google does not have a full form. It is derived from the word “googol” which means a large number, that is 1 followed by 100 zeros.

Google Inc is a US based multinational company. Currently, it is the most popular search engine among Internet-related services and products. Its core functional areas are online advertising technology, cloud computing, search engines and software. In addition, Google is the most used search engine in the entire world.

Google is a major subsidiary of Alphabet. After the reorganization, Sundar Pichai became CEO of Google while Larry Page became CEO of Alphabet. In 2004, Google launched its free web-based email service, Gmail, and in 2005, it introduced Google Earth and Google Maps. Google has also introduced Android, an operating system for mobile devices, and the Google Chrome browser.

Brief History of Google

• Google was started in 1996 as a research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, both are Ph.D. students at Stanford University. He created a new technology (PageRank) to determine the relevance of the website.
•  Larry Page and Brin originally named their new search engine “BackRub”, as the system examined backlinks to estimate the site’s importance. Eventually, he changed the name to Google.
• The domain google.com was registered on 14 September 1997 and Google Corporation was established in September 1998 the following year.
• In March 1999, the company moved its offices to Palo Alto, California, which is home to several prominent Silicon Valley technology start-ups.
• In June 2000, it was announced that Google would become the default search engine provider for Yahoo!, one of the most popular websites at the time, replacing Inktomi.
• The term PageRank (PageRank) was patented in September 2001. In the same year, Eric Schmidt was appointed as Google’s new CEO.
• In 2004, Google launched its free web-based email service, Gmail.
• In the year 2005, Google Earth and Google Maps were introduced.
• In 2007, Google introduced Android, an open platform for mobile devices.
• On 2 September 2008, Google introduced the Google Chrome browser.
• In May 2015, Google announced its intention to build its campus in Hyderabad, India. The company’s largest campus outside the United States, will accommodate 13,000 employees.
•  In September 2016, Google launched a project for public Wi-Fi at railway stations in India.
• On March 19, 2019, Google announced that it would enter the video game market, launching a cloud gaming platform called Stadia.
• In April 2020, it was reported that Google announced several cost-cutting measures as a response to the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Such measures included slowing down hiring for the remainder of 2020.
